The biodiesel industry is working to clarify the different terms being used. I want to pass on these definitions to ensure everyone is on the same page. They will soon be doing a lot of advertisements using this terminology.
Biodiesel: An alternative fuel produced from domestic, renewable resources. It contains no petroleum. It is biodegradable, nontoxic and essentially free of sulfur.
Biodiesel Blend: Biodiesel that has been blended with heating oil or diesel fuel. It can be used in diesel engines and oil fired home heating systems with no modifications as long as the blend doesn’t exceed 20%.
Bioheat®: Is the industry-accepted term for any blend of pure biodiesel with conventional high or low sulfur home heating oil.
Biofuel: Is a broad term stating that a solid, liquid, or gas fuel consists of, or is derived from, plant or animal sources.
As an example: Mass Biofuel sells a biofuel, specifically Bioheat®, a biodiesel blend for home heating. They offer two blends of Bioheat® one being 80% traditional heating oil blended with 20% biodiesel and the other 80% ultra low sulfur diesel blended with 20% biodiesel.
